Melting Icebergs Activity - September 24 -October 6, 2013

Melting Icebergs: Science Inquiry The presented melting iceberg experiment is a great activity to present students with an inquiry of the effects of such events. This task is structured and contains the necessary guidance as to permit students construct and formulate their own questions as to understand the reality and seriousness of this melting of icebergs and polar ice caps. The experiment demonstrates that as the floating ice melts the volume of water increases. What would happen if the polar ice caps melted? There will be a combination of events: 1) rising of sea levels, 2) accelerate global warming, 3) changes ecosystems, 4) threatens human culture and economics, and 5) increases seawater freshwater contamination, which can affect coastal erosion. All these in one way or the other are interconnected. One of the most talked about concerns is that of the rising of the sea levels. It has been documented that the melting itself of icebergs doesn’t affect sea levels. On the other end, the melting of the polar ice caps will because as the ice melts, the temperature of the seawater increases. It is important to mention that the polar ice caps help reflect sunlight back into the atmosphere, if the ice is melted the sunlight will be absorbed by the ocean thus increasing its temperature, which will cause the water to expand and rise. This rising of the temperature will accelerate global warming. Global warming has been a topic of national and global importance among communities of scientists and political officials. This itself can bring other questions (inquires) from this activity: A.How does global warming affect the polar ice caps? B. Have governmental agencies develop a realistic plan to slow down global warming? * in the last 100 years global warming has increase ½ degree. C. Currently, are the 2 mayor polar ice caps in danger (Artic & Antarctica)? D. How will it directly affect populations of humans and other species? All these questions can have its instructional value during this task. The great part of these types of activities is that it invites students to formulate their own inquiries and look for the answers. Definitely, this is a good inquiry based instruction sample in which active learning is in place. Students will engage in the activity by formulating questions and collecting data, which they will use to present and reflect. Students will conduct the experiment and apply their learning to their lives, society, and technology (Hammerman, 2006). References: Hammerman, E. L. (2006). Well Mr.Rosado, I like your point of view and believe it or not, I agree. There should be something done about global warming. Maybe nothing can't be done because its nature. Nature affects us and we affect it also. Your point of view inspired me as a student to research more about global warming and study about it. Us humans can be the main problem.
I got this from http://www.skepticalscience.com/ : "While the opening of a year-round ice free Arctic passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans would confer some commercial benefits, these are considerably outweighed by the negatives. Detrimental effects include loss of polar bear habitat and increased mobile ice hazards to shipping." So even if you think global warming helps, you gotta blink again. Global Warming affects animal's habitat. Which is something we should pay attention to. I believe there something has to be done. I saw this from eartheasy.com: Global warming can be slowed, and stopped, with practical actions that yield a cleaner, healthier atmosphere. The question is: will we act soon enough?

“Many people don’t realize that we are committed right now to a significant amount of global warming and sea level rise…the longer we wait to do something about it, the more change we will have.”

Gerald Meehl, The National Center for Atmospheric Research

Ultimately it is up to each of us, as individuals and families, to take action to slow down and eventually reverse global warming through everyday awareness of our energy use, and attention to ways we can conserve electricity and minimize fossil fuel usage. So we can do something about it! Each of us, individuals can take action! We could cut down our energy, and conserve energy. I also saw this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDYqlTsZfgw NASA talking about how we, humans affect global warming. Like the main, Burning of fossil fuels. As I said: "Nature affects us, and we affect it also.

I also agree with Abdul there should be done something about global warming.
In http://www.skepticalscience.com it states the negatives of global warming which are:Decreasing human water supplies, increased fire frequency, ecosystem change and expanded deserts.
Decline in rice yields due to warmer nighttime minimum temperatures.
Increase of Western United States wildfire activity, associated with higher temperatures and earlier spring snowmelt. Encroachment of shrubs into grasslands, rendering rangeland unsuitable for domestic livestock grazing.
Decreased water supply in the Colorado River Basin.
Decreasing water supply to the Murray-Darling Basin. For health the followings are :Increased deaths to heatwaves - 5.74% increase to heatwaves compared to 1.59% to cold snaps.
Increased heat stress in humans and other mammals.
Spread in mosquite-borne diseases such as Malaria and Dengue Fever.
Increase in occurrence of allergic symptoms due to rise in allergenic pollen .
For glacier melt the followings are:Severe consequences for at least 60 million people dependent on ice melt for water supply.
      Contribution to rising sea levels.
You could reduce global warming by reducing fossil fuel use. Also by planting trees which slows or stops down global warming. The most important thing reduce waste. Also you need to conserve water. You need to turn off water if you are not using it.You also need to recycle. Reduce Reuse and Recycle.

    2. ARNAB, awesome points and references. It' s great that you were able to relate a series of events to one major cause. That's what scientist sometime refer to as THE CIRCLE OF LIFE (acunamatata :) ).The common thing about global warming is that many scientist believe in its effects and the final outcome as global temperature increases. The difference among them is that some say its just around the corner and other say we still have time to turn the negative effects around. Personally, for me global warming is a one way street heading towards the final expected outcome of consequences you have presented. At the end, nature and mother Earth will have the last laugh.

Great post and you did a great job identifying your resources. This is an excellent example of the type of posting I am expecting from all students. I will be refering students to look at your post as a model.

    3. ABDUL, you did an excellent job on your first post. I enjoyed your information and the way you present your references. You pointed out various effects we will experience as global warming continues to increase. I respect your opinion that we still as intelligent species can work towards slowing down the effects by reducing the causes and effects of global warming.

Countries and agencies around the world have been involved in educating society of how to slow down global warming, In the United States its a constant issue starting from recycling all the way to reducing air contaminants. A lot of educating needs to be put to work.

Unfortunately, our globalization seems to have bigger agendas and purposes other than saving our planet.

      Keep up the great work!

I also agree with you. In the last 100 years, earths temperature has increased about half a degree Celsius. Even thought it dosent sound like alot this can make a huge impact on earth.
Also through the years the sea level has risen 6-8 inches so there will be a rise in sea level if the polar caps melt. Now the ice sheets have been melting faster than ever.
I Agree with Abdul, it can be slowed down and stopped. But not on itself! Humans have to change themselves before they can change earth.
Its not to late. “Many people don’t realize that we are committed right now to a significant amount of global warming and sea level rise…the longer we wait to do something about it, the more change we will have.”-Gerald Meehl, The National Center for Atmospheric Research by http://eartheasy.com/blog/2009/03/global-warming-climate-change-what-we-can-do-about-it/
To make a step we can start with dishwashers. You don’t have to run your dishwasher every time you eat. By filling it completely, you can save $40 and 100 lbs. of CO2 emission a year. CO2 is carbon dioxide.

  3. Kathleen, you made some awesome points! That 1/2 degree Celsius increase can have a devastating effect on Earth. Can you just imagen what would happen to many cities on the coast that are at sea level (if sea level rises 6 inches)? Did you know that there are cities that are at below sea level?

Excellent post. Keep up the great work.

I also believe with Arnab, Abdul, and Kathleen that earth’s temperture has increased half a degree celsius.People may think that it is nothing but it could make a huge difference.Over the last one hundred years the earth’s sea level has rised over 4 to 8 inches. in 2008 there was a historic flood and Venice,Italy had a risk of the whole island sliding into the ocean this was connected to global warming.Polar ice caps usualy melt a bit each summer. That is very bad and we have to stop it because if the polar ice cap melts it will cause floods all over.
Nasa scientest expert Waleed Abdalati says that in the next century the sea level will rise up to 1 meter. All the islands in the caribbean will sink into the ocean. The damages will cost up to a trillion dollars in expense. We need to stop co2. that is carbon dioxide. for people who have dish washers they should not turn on their dishwashers everytime they eat. dishwashers a year could use up to 100 or more pounds of co2.

as kathleen said I also agree with you. In the last 100 years, earths temperature has increased about half a degree Celsius. Even thought it dosent sound like alot this can make a huge impact on earth. She is right it might not sound like alot but it is trust me. People should reduce fossil fuel and then you can reduce global warming. Just that simple. An iceberg is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open water.Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Global warming is not a joke people should take it serious and do as much as you can to reduce it.

I also agree with you Abdul and Arnab. Something has to be done but, unfortunately nothing can be done to stop Global Warming. In http://www.skepticalscience.com it states the global warming effects people and places in certain ways and reasons. Some ways that it effects us is: water may decrease, deserts can expand, fires can get larger, and everything can change. Deaths can increase higher and higher.Scientists predict an increase in sea levels worldwide due to the melting of two massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland, especially on the East coast of the U.S.

Almost 100% of the observed temperature increase over the last 50 years has been due to the increase in the atmosphere of greenhouse gas concentrations like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone. Greenhouse gases are those gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect (see below). The largest contributing source of greenhouse gas is the burning of fossil fuels leading to the emission of carbon dioxide. Its effects on animals and on agriculture are indeed frightening, and the effects on the human population are even scarier. The causes are mainly from us, the human race, and the effects on us will be severe. When organic matter is broken down by bacteria under oxygen-starved conditions as in rice paddies, methane is produced. The process also takes place in the intestines of herbivorous animals, and with the increase in the amount of concentrated livestock production, the levels of methane released into the atmosphere is increasing.rising temperatures could lead to the extinction of more than a million species. This can also lead to more hurricanes. Reducing fossil fuel use can slow down or maybe stop global warming.Planting trees can also be helpful. The most important thing reduce waste. You also need to recycle.

  20. Really? OK. Hi how's life Ronneice? Also hi Mr. Rosado. I wanted to add something about science. Science is about life. Science is also based on everything in the world. There are no right or wrong answers. There are only possibilities and alot of scientists in the world who still have so many things to learn about. Kids should continue to learn about the wonders in the world, and they should realize that everyone still has something to learn about. So what I'm trying to say is that Science is based on life, and the world so you would never know what to expect. Unless you continue to study hard, focus, and trust your instincts because your never wrong. That is what I wanted to add about Science and how Science is connected to the world.

{I agree with Abdul,Stephanie,Kathleen,Arnab, and Erica} To Mr.Rosado I agree with ALL of you guys since global warming is kind of happening because of humans. I was watching the breaking news on CNN and it happens that they were talking about that subject. Also I've heard that by the end of 2013, early 2014 and mid 2014 global warming will have bigger impacts on us then just the temperature getting warmer or cooler. These will include Earthquakes, Tsunamis and After-Shocks in a lot of places and in some it is extremely rare to see a natural catastrophe. These states/countries are New York,Miami,California,China,Japan,Taiwan,France, and Russia.Near the Middle East will be earlier and more dangerous. Sheets of glacier from Antarctica and Greenland could melt causing massive floods, tsunamis and mudflows. For example in 2008 there was a historic flood in Venice,Italy and it was considered as the fourth biggest flood in recent history.Polar ice caps usually melt a bit each summer. Because of global warming, they melt all year long which causes all the floods, high tides and mudflows. Even penguins and other arctic animals are affected by the climate change that takes place out there. Due to global warming around the world, their natural environment is affected. Those species that live in the extremely cold regions depend on the ice because it is what they walk on. When it is melting at fast rates it completely changes their natural environment. At the same time it can make them vulnerable to predators that they were protected from in the past due to the thick sheets of ice.As inhabitants of this planet, we need to stop polluting so that we can live in a better place and guarantee a clean and safer world for the future generations. My work of the Venice was from http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/12/venice_under_water.html

This can effect us by weather changes and serious floodings. What can also happen is that human diseases might increase because of the weather climates. What can also happen is that an insect can bite you carrying a disease that cant be cureable. What can also happen is many hurricanes and warmer water around us.Their could also be a big drought and a heat wave that can kill most animals if their isn't any food around. The economy might also suffer just because of global warming.Fires might start to accure more offten and can kill many tress and natural enviorements.Tsunamis can start to form, volcanoes will erupt more frequently, and dangerous thunder storms .So global warming is very serious because it can kill and do alot of damage to the earth.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "Ok" Mr rosado so doesnt ice needed to melt isnt it suppost to only melt only when there is warm heat on the ice. Well i dont understand casue most of the time even if its cold outside the ice isnt suppost to melt unless its warm heat or anything.

  57. I agree with christian and jesus and melissa . Yes i agree with you because if global warming continues it can kill animals and different species we might want to be discovering more about later on. this water could kill animal just like fish turtle and other special animal that we might not know a bought. it also could kill other people and destroy country.

  58. Hi Mr. this Aisha from 733 ^ ^ THIS IS WHAT I THINK : In the last 100 years, earths temperature has increased about half a degree Celsius. Even thought it dosent sound like alot this can make a huge impact on earth. People should reduce fossil fuel and then you can reduce global warming. An iceberg is a large piece of freshwater ice that has broken off a glacier or an ice shelf and is floating freely in open water.Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Global warming is not a joke more people should take this it serious. People think this can kill animals.

  59. I think something should be done about global warming. There is nothing we can do about it.Someways that global warming effects us is water may decrease, deserts can expand, and fires can get larger. In my research i found out that scientists predict an increase in sea levels worldwide due to the melting of two massive ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland, especially on the East coast of the U.S.
I believe global warming is going to get worse than people think it is.We better find a way to do something. Part of me believes that people have done this to the world.I think that we could make a change.

    2. That prediction is one that worries a lot of scientists. What makes it more controversial is that scientists have different opinions and predictions of when this will actually occur.

  60. Global warming is increasing fast. But there's really nothing we can do about it. Also global warming is also killing animals and other species that we don't know about. At the same time we have glaciers that are melting and increasing sea levels which could increase floods. So when it rains in a regular country that gets easily flooded by that is going to be worst because of the glaciers melting.

    1. Alvin, great information. The melting of ice caps will bring in floods like never before.

  61. I agree with Abdul I think that global warming is dangerous. It can effect other species besides our own. When the polar ice caps melt it causes many bodies of water to rise. This can effect creatures that live in these places in a fatal way. This can also effect us too because when sea level overflows it can flood low lands. Over a 100 people die during floods every year. If these floods continue over 10,000 people can die a year.

The sad thing about global warming is there really isn't a lot we can do about it. The damage has already been done. We can try to use less gas and fuels but it still won't solve the underlying problem. We are still going to have to face theses effect. Like it or not it's to late.

    2. We can't do much about it because society is more worried about industrialization other means that contribute to pollution.

  64. Global Warming is very Dangerous. Global Warming is moving faster because of our fault. Global Warming is moving faster because us people are not taking care of our environment. We are not doing something to stop global warming. People should do something to stop global warming.

I agree with you Jermaine. Global Warming is very dangerous. Global Warming effects different kinds of species not only us. Something should be done to stop global warming. We should start doing stuff to protect our community. We can try to use less light and try to recycle more.

    1. I agree with u erica something must be done. The earths animals vegetation all will be gone if global warming isnt stopped. This doesnt affect us as much as it does to the animals

  65. *make up since i havent done it yet*
I believe the real problem is us. A couple hundred years ago this problem didnt even exist! This is due to a the pollution these days.Global warming was coused by us and can only be stopped by us.

Global warming must be stopped. It doesnt only effect the humans, but the animals.Animals of the artic are losing their home due to it getting warmer. Some fish only live in cold regions if thats lost then some fish willdissapear from the ocean.Lastly well us.With glaciers and ice caps melting the earths water will overflow. Our beautiful earth will lose all its green and will be left blue with nothing.

  66. sorry for doing this not on time but at least i did it

    jormill columba

    733

The world has a cap at the top of this atmesphere and us humans are destroying it without it we all will be in danger. There are ways that we can save our world. The steam of the fabrics goes up in the air and it brakes pieces of the atmosphere cap. also what makes the cap brake is the gasoline and the car steam brake the caps too.

not only it gets us in danger it also melts the ice because that cap protects us from the sun without it we all be cooked and once the ice melts on of the animals that are in danger is then polar bear and once it melts the bears will drowned in the water. that is why we should protect our planet.

hope you like my statement mr.rosado

  67. i agree with jormill because the carbon dixiside begins to breakdown the ozone layer. and the rays of the sun begins to increase to penetrate the athmosphere. then the heat begins to heat the earth and melt the ice glaciers. hope u like it mr rosado
