Science and technology - Week 2 - October 7 thru October 14, 2013

In the early 1900's, many of today's known diseases were present but had different names and of cause, different treatments. Without today's technology, many of these diseases were: 1) undetectable, 2) not comprehended, 3) thought as 'not curable', or 4) simple left to chances. Example: Children with Down Syndrome were in the early 1900's institutionalized, as many other genetic disorders and disease state. Patients probably with cancer or tumors were treated without hope. A simple cold or bronchitis would complicate into a pneumonia maybe leading to death. Science was present, but medicine didn't flourish until technology began to change our lives. Today thanks to major advances in medicine due to technology lives are being saved everyday. Science, medicine, and technology will continue to change the lives of millions. YOUR TASK: Doing research, name one or two of the major advances done in medicine and working with new treatments that technology has had a major influence in. State the disease, the description of the disease , the technology, and how has it been used to fight the disease state. Cite your sources.

  1. I agree that modern day technology has helped save the life of many people. Without technology and medicine many people would have died of an illness like HIV, AIDS and CANCER. For example if a student has Aids and another student catches it they will both get sick. If there are no doctors to cure them they might die. I agree that modern day technology and medicine is the key to saving many people also with the help of doctors.

    1. I agree with you that a lot of people died back then because of cancer.Cancer slowly kills the victim and its really sad of how many people died because of this. And now if you get treated early you have 45/100 chance to survive.Or even 50/50 chance to survive. There is also a disese called Parkinson's which some people have.Like Muhammad Ali and Michael J. Fox and people are hope that there soon be a cure for this.Recently Scientists developed a implant that could stop Parkinson's growth.See we are going ahead.

You see we are looking at the future which can saves millions of lives Parkinson's is a disese that makes you body shake and you have trouble doing regular things.Michael J Fox keeps his mind away by playing ice hockey and he feels okay.http://katiecouric.com/videos/michael-j-fox-on-living-with-parkinsons-2/.Highlight the link and select go to.You see how difficult it is.He cant even brush his teeth becasue of this.Parkinsons's make it hard to things to do that can be done without any trouble.I suggest you read the book Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist which he wrote himself.

    2. I Agree And Disagree With You Saaif With Our Modern Technology Has Saved a Lot Of Lives. But, What If All The Pills And The Treatments Are Just Affecting The Body More. What About Herbal Treatment Those In The Past Have Helped People Live Life Healthy Like Albert Enistien Once Said "It is tasteless to prolong life artificially.

    4. I agree with Zoule because it is true about the pills.Poeple wgo got herbal treatment would be more healthy then the ones with pills and such.Pills can damage the boby even a little damage is bad. People would get addicted to these and would be caterogized as a drug rather than a medicine which was the original purpose of it.

    5. I agree with Saaif because if technology and medicine weren't here people will be dying like trash especially diseases like that they are very easy these days to catch so with things like that to help it will make it easy to take them away.

I agree with Saaif and Arnab, millions of people die if technology and medicine wasent here to help us. Many people take medicine for granted but the matter of the fact is they help us and the world. Technology also has some down side for example, Technology make man kind "lazyer" now we are making a tool to crack eggs? Thats why we should use technology that can help us on difficelt things like curing diseases not to clap to turn the lights off. I also agree with you Zoule, but also want to add on that adding more pills to our body can make a new diseases or can start.

One diseases that technology and medicine helped is cancer. One thing that technology did a huge advantage is they made a manchine that can sense how much the tumor and how much is affecting you. Back in the day they didnt knew the cancer you had was a big deal , now we can tell. We are trying to find a cure, people say that we already can cure it, technecely, we can cure it but its not 100% you can get read of it, theres a 68% you will survive it but you still might now even afforod the trement.

  3. I agree with everyone.Yet you must all know that back in the day people would get healthier treatments such as herbal medicine like Zoule said.Know in days people get more sick due to the many pills given. Some people are even obssesed with a centain and take it more than they need to,which is very unhealthy.

A sickness solved by modern science is the common cold.In the old days Colds where taken much more serious.A patient could go as long to die of a simple cold! Yet know there is medicine for it.Now instead of months of getting rid that cold,it would only take weeks or even days.

  4. I am Brian Ortiz and I agree with this because back then, needles were very painful ad well as some other medical surgeries. Now, Japan has invented a new needle that is painless. They did this by studying mosquitoes.
Also, there was no way to detect if someone had brain cancer until it was too late. Now, all we do is simpily take a MRI test and observe what is happening. As you can see, medical advancents helped save many more lives than before. Those are some reasons of medical advancements used woth treatment.

  5. This is Sebastian Soriano and I agree with this because, back then lots of patients died because of dieseases they had because of the lack of technology and research. Back then, patients of dieseases. One of them was cancer patients died very quickly.
The reason why is because of the lack of medicine 20 years ago. Now, people all overbthe world have treatments for their dieseases. Maybe we don't have a CURE for some dieseases such as HIV and cancer, but we habe treatments! I'm more than glad to be born when medical technology evolved.

Today technology is way easier to collect data and information to cure these diseases. Such as cancer, over the last 20 years many patients died because of cancer. Now, we have treatments for such diseases.

  7. Kory Williams. I am surprised because needles hurt when it goes through your skin. I'm also surprised how it was inspired by the most annoying bug ever, in my own opinion. Others might think another insect like a spider. I also researched that they can also spread diseases like HIV. They can because their blood sucking straw could of taken blood from someone that has HIV, then it goes into the next person. But back to the subject. When the scientist see that those bugs take blood from people they don't feel it at all. so I thing that technology has evolved alot

  10. It is true that along time ago people had to heat up needles and take vaccines to people along time a go.It is said that nobody knows why needles hurt right after they give you a vaccination. Many people back then didn't know about diseases or even how to cure them.People only knew about stomach aches and fever .Nobody new a cure for diseases such as cancer or polio and other diseases .Thats why its important to study much about different types of diseases that can spread easily among humans.

  11. modern day technology is better because now we can quickly determine if a person has a contagious or bad Disease ,its a good thing because now we can get treatment faster, rather than waiting for a plant or an antidote. Now people can determine how to cure cancer , they try to help it from becoming worse and some people are alive thanks to modern technology, back then people didnt have radioactive treatment but now scientist and physicist can find most of the solutions for our problems .If it weren't for ca-scans and other things many people would be suffering.

  12. My opinion about modern day technology is that it saved a lot of peoples' lives. I believe this because a long time ago we did not have a lot of medicines to save, help or cure people. Instead a lot of people died. Scientists were trying to invent new kinds of medicines and herbs. In instance, there was this woman named Henrietta Lacks and she was suffering pain from her womb. Although, the weird thing about her was that she was immortal because her cells never died and they kept on growing and growing. However they are still growing now.
To this new year, there are differents kinds of medicines to cure people. Besides, Henrietta Lacks sacrificed her life and she gave her cells away to help save people. Her cells were called HELA. They are still living. Now we have new kinds of medicines and herbs to cure people. Scientists are still making new kinds of medicine.

  13. Well I agree that modern day technology has help the world in many ways like to help us know more on how to cure sickness. And it could help us for a example a sickness like down syndrome which mean a genetic condition in which a person has 47 chromosome instead of the usually 46. And modern technology helps us know how to treat diseases faster which is better because if they don't know how to treat the patient could die which is not good. So that is why I think the modern day technology helps people or family with crazy sickness get better.

  14. I agree with Puja. Modern day technology has helped and saved a lot of lives in many different ways. In a long time there was no cure for cancer. One major advance made in medicine is HEART DISEASE. Heart diseases drooped to 40 percent.A mere 25 years ago, when a patient came to a hospital with a heart attack, the best that could be done was to put the patient in a darkened room, give him or her morphine for pain and lidocaine, which doctors believed would prevent dangerous irregular heartbeats, and hope for the best.Heart attacks, called infarcts, were "big" and the damage to the heart muscle was often catastrophic, leading eventually to heart failure and death.

A heart disease can cause your death. A heart disease is what someone would probably not want to have because it really hurts. The modern day technology has saved a lot of people. The modern day technology has helped people get better and continue with the life they had. This has given a lot of people another opportunity to be in this wonderful world.

  15. Kory Williams 7-733 I find this very interesting Because if I was born In the 1900s The simple things like the virus like cancer could sneak up on me and kill me. If only they found a machine that could detect cancer in the brain before its too late. I also realize that something as simple as the common cold could kill you slowly and painfully. The sad thing is that many people died when it could easily done with in the present. There are medicines to treat a cold, but they don't have a cure for the common cold. Its really sad. In conclusion there are things in the present that really could be useful back then like it is now.

  19. Diseases-many can be cured, but what about back then? Was it the same or was it way different than the way we cure many today? On http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ it says that diseases, and death were people's main preocupation back then before the 20th century. After steady progress during the 18th century, the biological and medical sciences began to advance at a remarkable rate during the 19th century. So this means that sciences in technology began to advance and speed up at an uncontrolable rate during the 19th century.
Some of the deadliest diseases that can now be cured: Smallpox. Probably one of the most famous diseases ever because of its now basically total elimination from the world, smallpox is a virus spread through human contact. The vaccine was so successful that in 1980 the World Health Organization stopped recommending that people use it. Some nations, however, fear that the little remaining smallpox there is will be used as a method of bioterrorism.
Polio. Most people know about polio because of elementary school studies on vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk (props, dude) but the infection left untreated leads to paralysis and sometimes death. It doesn’t have a cure, but the vaccine has prevented the disease from spreading in most countries.
Measles. Measles is a virus that grows in cells in the lungs, which causes cold-like symptoms and can lead to pneumonia. Today, measles has low rates in the United States (despite a Super Bowl outbreak people freaked out about in 2012) but there are 20 million cases worldwide and about 150,000 deaths a year, over half of which are in India.
Yellow fever. Yellow fever is still found in South America and Africa, and is spread through mosquitos. It can eventually lead to liver disease but there is a vaccine for people who are traveling in those areas and are at risk. Oh and the reason it’s called yellow fever is that in severe cases, people turn yellow.
Malaria. Malaria starts with a parasite but, like yellow fever, is spread through mosquitos, manifesting in flu-like symptoms. The CDC reports that in 2010, there were 216 MILLION cases of malaria around the world, most of them concentrated in Africa. In the United States there are about 1,500 cases a year. Once infected, there are antimalarial drugs available – as well as medication that can be taken before traveling to high-risk areas – but no vaccine.
Typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is caused by a bacteria spread through food or beverages. There’s a vaccine and treatment available through antibiotics but in the U.S. there are still around 400 cases a year. In the rest of the world, 21.5 million people are infected a year.
Whooping cough. It manifests a lot like it sounds like it does – through a lot of coughing, often leading to pneumonia. There were 18 deaths in the United States in 2012, out of over 41,000 cases, the majority of which were in young children.
Tetanus. Tetanus is also known as lockjaw because your muscles tighten in the jaw to a degree where you can’t open your mouth, swallow or eat. It’s caused by a bacteria and one in 10 cases lead to death. A vaccine prevents it, but it requires booster shots.

  20. Now today i have learn that technology had help us in many ways. especially in illness. like when somebody gets paralized with technology they found out that embroys can cure that. with out technology there wouldn't be a cure for HIV,AIDS and cancer.

  21. I agree with most of these people. Science has improved in a good way. Through science we can heal people that need it. At first people weren't able to detect if they had any serious sickness. Now many people can find out if they have a certain disease and put a stop to it if it's in its early stage. This is all thanks to modern day science.
Today thanks to modern technology developed through science we can view illnesses and injuries. Machines like x-rays can show if a person has broken any bones in their body. A CAT scan can also show what's happening in the human body on a more detailed level. Back in the 1800s people didn't have this type of technology. This makes us lucky.
